As part of the niche sector Platypus operates in we have a great deal of understanding and knowledge of students; from pre-school to postgraduate levels.

Numerous educational establishments call upon our expertise and experience within this sector to assist them in their research projects and to engage and understand their current and potential ‘customers of education’.

Our mission is to pioneer change in the Education sector by supporting organisations in their future strategies and helping them to understand how learners, influencers and businesses are responding to the ever changing landscape.

4Educational research needs to be widely inclusive and have a more commercial edge than ever before.  Platypus is unique in that we have a deep understanding of the lives of young people and influencers through the education and commercial research that we are continually conducting.  We have a UK wide database and vast experience of working with schools and colleges and have conducted research for a large number of educational organisations producing insights and recommendations that have been instrumental to the future of their organisation.

Universities are increasingly having to consider their marketing approach to attracting potential students to stand out amongst their competitors. Our experience suggests that potential students are becoming more focused on comparing course content across institutions and looking to those universities and courses specifically that could maximise their chances of employment.  We also have knowledge of the mature student market and can assist in understanding their very different needs.

Some examples of relevant research projects we have conducted recently include:

  • Providing insights into the information needs of prospective MATURE students to help optimise future campaigns targeting undergraduates in this segment.
  • Research into the employer perspective of a potential new style Masters course in order to provide insight to help optimise course design for students and to ensure it was attractive and beneficial to employers.
  • Investigating the impact of the increase in tuition fees on students’ behaviour and decision making and the impact that it has had on brand perceptions and the competitor context.
  • Guiding the future offer and course list of a newly established university by helping them to understand students and key influencers within their catchment area in terms of decision making criteria and requirements.
  • exploring the information requirements of students considering progressing to further education for a Government agency. Including an exploration of the level of institution and course information required, the sources of information used to get this information and additional information required to inform decision-making.
  • Establish understanding of the current brand perception of a University and to establish whether the current communication tolls are portraying the desired brand values to ensure that the University is positioned effectively to attract its target customers.
  • Testing reactions and advising of changes following industry workshops from employers regarding course content and structure for part-time Masters courses
